Browsing Posts in Cars

So I just found this list while looking for some pics of Irwindale Speedway today (I can’t believe the drifting season is ending already!):
ZipTied’s Top 20 Drift cars of all time

Hey look at that, my sileighty is in the list. Wow really? Of all time? That’s pretty big. The poll was asked of ziptied.com members and it was posted as “what cars do YOU feel are the most influential, iconic, memorable, drift cars of all time”. I for sure don’t think my car should even be considered in that context, but I’m flattered nonetheless.

It’s kind of interesting to look at the results because you get an idea that the people on ziptied have a unique outlook. I remember back in the day watching drifting videos with Andy Yen and others… Haruguchi was definitely a memorable character, but not necessarily a top influencer. The ziptied guys LOVE him because of his ride height and crazy car/driving style. With ziptied members posting all over the place about how much Haruguchi is the coolest drifter of all time, suddenly people love him to death. He’s #2 on the ziptied list. Kind of crazy how that happened. You will also notice that in the list there are a lot of cars built more recently, which probably says that the people who voted are of a newer generation of drifting.

What’s your top 20 list? Actually 20 is pretty hard… here’s my top 15? I would tend to think about the cars that influenced me and made me want to get into drifting. Here’s my go at it:
1. Koguchi – black 180sx
2. Imamura – brown ae86
3. Taniguchi – red hks s15
4. Kumakubo – orange s15
5. Utsumi – blue onevia
6. Ueno – red soarer
7. Nomuken – white s14
8. Alex Pfieffer – various ae86s
9. Kamimoto – red supercharged ae86
10. Ueo – cream ae86
11. Fukuda – yellow 180sx
12. Hiroshi Takahashi – red ae86
13. Keiichi’s TRD AE86
14. DJ Electrique Mike – blue S13
15. All of those beautiful Night Walkers sedans

Anybody out there looking for a cheap AE86? My old friend Herb is selling his daily driver… sounds like he put some good work into it and is in good running condition. Buy an ae86 owned and maintained by somebody who loves ae86s and not some kid who doesn’t know what they’re doing!

Have you ever perused the Mazda USA website? If you have, you may have stumbled across the Tuning section where they also list a bunch of featured tuned Mazdas. How cool is that? Who else does that? I guess the exception is Scion, but Scion caters to the kiddies, so there’s not much of a surprise there.

Anyway, check out my buddy Justin’s car recently featured on Mazda’s website!

You can also see Calvin Wan’s FD and the Apex’i FD when it was cool looking.

Okay, so I have to post again so I don’t have Clay Aiken at the top of my journal haha!

Ultimate Tool Co

So my good buddy Scott has started this new business selling unique tools from Japan – more specifically KTC Japan. Check it out – he’s got some great stuff!

Here’s some of my favs:

Color coded thin wall wheel sockets! How often do you find yourself wasting your time picking up your wheel socket looking carefully for the etched 17mm or 21mm writing? TOO LONG! I never have to look now. Genius!

Square sockets! Don’t strip the fill/drain plugs anymore on your LSD or transmission!! Just buy these and be one step ahead ahead of caveman status!

Panel popper set. I have 2 newish cars, so unlike with my s13s, I actually care if I break those stupid tabs holding my interior panels together. Scott says this is actually his best seller.

If you’re interested in any of these things, please don’t hesitate to order! He’s a personal friend of mine and I definitely vouch for him. Don’t worry about his sketchy website either – we’ll work on that pretty soon!

Cindy McCain is a “drifter”. I’m still not voting for McCain – no matter how much I want to see somebody do a big donut in that roundabout in front of the white house.

The video is funny – they use footage of Nadine drifting. Is it the only drifting footage they had available, or did they use it because it’s a girl car?

Our Work wheels finally arrived!

Picking out offsets were kinda hairy because nobody really had any setups that I liked. Wheels too thin, staggered wheels aren’t staggered the way I like, tires are too wide – I like the way the car handles from the factory… there’s plenty of grip, steering feels good, and acceleration is quick. I wanted to maintain that with the new setup.

So I went with a 20×9.5 in the front and a 20×10.5 in the rear. Factory tires are 225 front and 245 rear, and these new Falken FK452s are 245 front and 255 rear. I didn’t want such a wide front tire, but available tire sizes in 20 are limited. Besides, this way I get to keep a 35 profile tire both in front and rear and the wheel+tire diameter is VERY close to stock, so it doesn’t mess with the speedo or the traction control.

All in all, I’m pretty happy… the Falken tires aren’t as nice as the OEM Bridgestone tires, but the Falken tires will last longer because of the treadwear rating. The car’s ride is a little more harsh, but it’s livable. I’m really liking that the wheels don’t look too large on the car and that the car still looks pretty subtle. A lot of times, 20 inch wheels scream at you from a mile away. I think you could walk by this car and not even notice it.

Oh one complaint – I should have gotten lower offset fronts… time to buy some spacers!

Thanks Kyle for taking photos for me!
