Recently, I’ve been IN LOVE with the taste of basil. For me, it was an acquired taste – I thought it had such a strong alien herby flavor but something just clicked one day.

Last night I made a dish with some shell pasta, mozzarella, basil, parmesan cheese, sauce made of tomatoes and chicken stock, and meatballs made from romano cheese, ground chicken, italian parsley, panko breadcrumbs. Italian food reminds me a lot of Chinese food in that many dishes are just different combinations of the same ingredients.

It was pretty good… and we were all full. But not as full as Elise.

A couple weeks ago, the family and I went to pick up the Mazdaspeed 3 from Tanabe. Jiro and James told us about this udon place around the corner. I wasn’t really in the mood for udon, because I really wanted some ramen from Mitsuwa, which was also around the corner. We ended up going to the udon place because it seemed a better to choice since we had baby Elise with us.

Luckily we found the restaurant – and only because Nadine was able to read the name of the restaurant in Hiragana. Lucky for me my wife is part FOB!

The restaurant was filled with all sorts of people – Japanese businessmen, families, couples. The menu was huge and had all types of appetizers, side dishes, rice dishes, ramen, and their infamous udon. Nadine went with her favorite udon – nabeyaki udon. I wanted to be brave and try some spicy seafood udon, but I wasn’t willing to wait the 15 minutes it required. I went with the Kanitama udon instead – crab meat and what they described as a light fluffy omelette. The description didn’t make sense to me until I got my food.

The udon was really good… flavorful and unique. The crab meat was fresh and I think it takes some skills to present the “egg omelette” that way in the udon. I really wish we were able to try the different side dishes people were getting. It seems like an awesome place to hang out and drink and just order everything under the sun. I can’t wait to go back… maybe when gas prices get cheaper and I get a raise haha!

I have a guilty pleasure – PASTRAMI. I love The Hat (pastrami dip, chili cheese fries topped with pastrami, pastrami burgers). I know it puts me on the highway to heart failure, but it’s just one of those things for me. I can’t get enough.

There’s this place that used to be near one of my old jobs and it was definitely a local favorite. Beers, chicken wings, pizza… a good recipe for any restaurant. Only, this place isn’t your normal pizza joint. Yeah, you may have guessed it – they have pastrami pizza. Now don’t bust out the barf bags yet. I know it sounds disgusting, but TRUST ME – it’s sooooo good.

If you are feeling a little adventurous and you love pastrami, you have got to try it. The taste of a pastrami sandwich mixed with hot melted cheese is such a great combination. And if you’re there, you may as well order up an anti-pasto salad (to make way for the new artery clogging) and some of their hot wings which are really good. OMG I am hungry.

Okay, so I’m not a big fan of donuts, but I’m always down to try some kind of freak recreation of normal boring food. Except maybe fried Twinkies. I don’t know if I ever want to eat that. Anyways, Nadine and I have been meaning to try these donuts for a super long time, and as I posted earlier, our free time is super precious lately – so we made a spur of the moment trip to Glendora to pay a visit to The Donut Man. When we arrived there were boxes of empty Strawberry cartons hanging out by the dumpster and a big sign saying Fresh Strawberry Donuts.

Nadine and I got in line – YES a line around the building at 9:30pm. There was even a TOUR BUS there ordering donuts – I guess this place is a tourist attraction as well. Everybody was ordering strawberry donuts @ $2.60 a donut. I was happy they didn’t run out by the time we got there.

We brought it home and before eating them, I made Nadine take some pictures so that I can share with all of you. It was good… not too sweet and the donut was nice and light, compared to heavy angel food cake or pound cake.

If you’re ever in the Glendora area, it’s right off of Route 66 –

Burger King has some really hilarious commercials. Here is a really funny video that Rob sent me. They play a bunch of pranks on actual customers to see how upset they are when they don’t get their Whoppers.
